CCS/MSP430F67791: Looking for energy meter library with CCS support

Part Number: MSP430F67791
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , MSP-EM-DESIGN-CENTER, TIDM-THDREADING

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

I am in between controller selection - MSP430F67791.

I am looking for energy meter library for ccs compiler.

slaa577g is available but i.e. for IAR .

But t is too expensive. hence looking for CCS.

Please update .

Regards

Girish

  • Hello Girish,

Thanks for your post. Over the past several years, we've had many users request CCS support for our embedded metering solutions, not just IAR. We heard that feedback and last year released the Energy Measurement Design Center (EMDC) GUI and software library that enables you to get started measuring high voltage quickly and easily while also supporting CCS! For all new designs, we recommend using EMDC rather than the legacy IAR-based Energy library (used in SLAA577). You can learn more about the new EMDC GUI and library by reading through our blog. There's also a short EMDC intro video at the bottom of the blog too.

As a follow-up, I wouldn't recommend the non-A version but rather the A-version, MSP430F67791A. You can read more about this in the Differences Between MSP430F67xx and MSP430F67xxA Devices.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your feedback.

I downloaded the GUI and library.

From that I generated CCS code.

But it  doesn't have reactive power measurement, energy measurement , THD measurement for voltage /current, power factor measurement etc.

    So please suggest solution.

    Regards

    Girish

  • Hello Girish,

That's a great start. EMDC supports most non-THD measurements including reactive power, energy measurement, power factor, frequency, etc. For a complete list of the supported measurements, please refer to the Features section on the EMDC product page, MSP-EM-DESIGN-CENTER.

Regarding THD measurements, EMDC does not support that yet. We're evaluating whether or not to add this support in the future, so can you please share more about what harmonics you're required to measure and any other THD-related requirements you need? I'll be sure to capture them and share them internally.

If your design does require THD measurements, then you can add the THD related code on top of the EMDC-generated code or you could reference our THD design (TIDM-THDREADING) based on our legacy Energy library, which only supports IAR.

    Hope this helps!

    Regards, James

  • Hi James,

    Thanks for your support,

I gone through details given in MSP-EM-DESIGN-CENTER.

It would solve one part of my application.

Regarding THD : In our application  it is desirable to measure THD of voltage and current up to 50th harmonic.

But initially it would be acceptable in case we can mange to measure THD of voltage and current at least up to 13th harmonic.

Regarding add top-up code for harmonic measurement with reference to (TIDM-THDREADING) :

It would very tricky afterwards as one part of my code would have been developed in CCS and other part in IAR.

I already went through solution of porting from IAR to CCS.

So instead of IAR could you please able to share solution which would have harmonic measurement in CCS.

  • Hi Girish,

Thanks for sharing your THD requirements. I've passed them along to our development teams, so they have more data points when they start working on this. As I mentioned, we're planning to add THD measurements to EMDC, but unfortunately, I don't have a specific timeline of when that would be completed. Thus, I think the best approach for you would be to use our IAR-based THD reference design. I wish I could help more.

    James
  • Hi

    As discussed,

It would not be possible to use IAR as it costly.

So please update as soon as your development of integrating THD measurement in EMDC complete.

  • Hi Girish,

    Thanks for your reply.

I definitely understand your concern about this.

As mentioned earlier, I don't have a definite timeline for when this will be completed. It could be as soon as 6 months or longer than 1 year. Unfortunately, I really don't know. I've definitely added you to the list of THD requests, and when completed, I will reach out to you via the email associated with your myTI account. Thanks.

    Regards,

    James
