MSP-FET: Error with IAR workbench 7.12. Can't find the device

Part Number: MSP-FET
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430G2432,

Hello,

I'm using IAR workbench for our MSP projects. Changed emulator tool from Olimex (which works wonderfully) to TI's MSP-FET when we upgraded IAR workbench from version 6 to 7. Problem is that MSP-FET doesn't work: Get: "Fatal error: Couldn't find the device". I've connected it according to the user's guide: external Vcc (3.3 V), pin 1 to RST on the target (MSP430G2432) , pin 7 to TEST on target, pin 4 to Vcc -target (3.3V), pin 9 to GND,

Have reported error to IAR but they don't know. The IAR workbench do communicate with the emulator - first thing it did was to upgrade firmware, but no luck after that.

Anyone who knows?

  • Hi Magnus,

    • Make sure the MSP-FET is plugged into a USB 2.0 port and plugged directly into your computer. (Not USB3.0 and Not a USB-Hub)
    • Make sure you have only 1 programmer plugged into your computer at a time
    • Check and to follow page 19, section 5.6.5.1-2 on the MSP debuggers user's guide to make sure the JTAG connector is configured correctly
    • What version of IAR workbench are you running?

  • Hello Chris,

Haven't heard before that MSP-FET can't handle USB 3. Not sure how to solve that. My development PC is a DELL Precision 7520 and it uses only USB 3.0's, no old USB's. Seems strange that TI' only development tool for MSP430 can't run on sate-of-art machines. You sure?

  • Hi Magnus, we've seen this issue with previous posters on this forum, and using a USB 2.0 port solves the issue.

Do you have another computer with a USB 2.0 port to test if this fixes your issue?

  • Hi Christopher

After lengthy discussions with IAR (who were very helpful), the solution came suddenly and unexpectedly. Problem was caused by a typo error. TI's manual "slau278ae.pdf" shows how to connect the MSP-FET for MSP430 Fxxxx and G2xxx  (see page 22, Fig 2.2). DO NOT FOLLOW THAT if you use these MSP's. If you still do, you'll end up with "Fatal error: Couldn't find the device". INSTEAD, connect the MSP-FET according to Figure 2.3 on page 23 (although the text says Fig 2.3 shouldn't be used for G and F series).

I guess this all comes down to a typo error from TI's side but hopefully this post will save some time for others. Finally, don't bother about USB 2 or 3. Connect according to Fig 2.3 and it works for both.

  • Hi Magnus,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We will investigate this documentation.

Glad to see you have resolved your issue.
