MSP-TS430RHB32A: Maximum operating temperature

Part Number: MSP-TS430RHB32A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430I2040

Hi Team,

Please help me answer the follow question from my customer, thank you so much.

Could you tell us about the maximum operating temperature (temperature) of MSP-TS430RHB32A? I checked the document but could not find the description. At present, temperature testing of MSP-TS430RHB32A is being conducted, but the phenomenon of stopping when operating at 80°C for 2 to 3 hours has occurred multiple times. There are only cable and the substrate in the constant temperature bath. The chip itself seems to be possible up to 105°C, MSP-TS430RHB32A I want to know what it is. In addition, the program at the time of evaluation performs AD conversion every 16 ms and outputs it by UART.

Best Regards,
Tom.Liu

  • Hi Liu,

Let me make sure I understand your question.  You are asking what the maximum temperature is for MSP-TS430RHB32A target development board? (pictured here)

  • Hi Lehman,

    Yes, that's my question.

One of my customer is conducting temperature testing of MSP-TS430RHB32A, but he encounter a problem that AD conversion is stopping multiple times each 2 or 3 hours. So he want to know the maximum temperature is for MSP-TS430RHB32A.

    Best Regards,
    Tom.Liu

  • Hey Liu,

I'll check with out EVM team, but I'm not sure we provide a maximum operating temp for the EVM boards themselves. Might take a day or two, but I'll see what I can find out.

What is the issue they are seeing?  What device are they using?

    Thanks,

    JD

  • Hey Liu,

EVM Team has informed me that all MSP EVMs have been designed for use and proof of concept at room temperature.  Anything outside of that has not been characterized or guaranteed.

For extreme temperature testing like this, It's recommended that the customer develop their own application board.

    Thanks,

    JD

  • Hi JD,

Thank you for your answer. But my customer has another additional question.
Could you please give us some advice?

As a result of researching here, since the gain setting is reset when the program stops, I think that the MCU may have been rebooted.
We are investigating both external factors such as 3.3V power supply and internal factors of the MCU, but the cause has not been determined.
Could you tell me what can be considered as the cause of the MCU rebooting?
As the operation of the MCU, the operation to AD convert AI4ch and internal temperature and output it by UART is performed every 16msec.

    Best Regards,
    Tom.Liu

  • Hello Liu,

I'm assuming the customer is using a MSP430I2040 device.  A reset can have many causes.  Could be a BOR, POR, or PUC.  All reset causes are definded in Chapter 1 of the Family User's Guide: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slau335/slau335.pdf

    Some common causes:

    • RST Pin
    • Brown out on VCC
    • SVS
    • protected area fault access
    • Flash Password failures
    • WDT timer
    • Waking from LPMx.5

You could try to read the interrupt flag register after a reset and see if there are any clues to the cause but I'm not sure that this will actually help.

    Thanks,

    JD
