MSP430FR6879: MSP Gang programmer error

Part Number: MSP430FR6879
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET, MSP-GANG

HI Guys

Customer having error and getting some inconsistency when programming a single device (UUT) with the gang programmer via SBW using the “MSP Gang programmer for MSP MCU application”.

Customer gets a the error above quite often and cannot get two UUT’s to program simultaneously.

They Press GO ( F9 ) a second time & the device programming succeeds.

Connection connections between the programmer to UUT.

Just some things to note:

  • All the wiring is less than 50cm.
  • All wires soldered to the test points are using a shielded cable. This cable interconnects to a ribbon cable which then plugs directly into the gang programmer.
  • The in program settings for SBW is set to slow & set to use the TDOI (pin 1 from Gang).
  • Target’s Power Supply
  • Supplied by programmer
  • Voltage 2.8V
  • Current max 50mA.
  • Vcc Settle Time 0.5s (minimum & maximum range has been tried).

On the flip side on my efforts, I have used a TI MSP-FET Flash Emulation Tool and this programs the UUT successfully every time.

Historically thecompany has used only the gang programmer within production for other devices.

Could you perhaps share some knowledge on an issues experiences like this?

Thanks

Rodney

  • Rodney,

So is the customer able to consistently program one device successfully, or do they sometimes get ERROR 33 with one device?

With two devices, are they consistently able to program the devices after a second press of the GO button?

I am a little confused with the single device vs multiple device testing you described above.

    Best regards,

    Matt

    • Using the MSP gang programmer with the MSP-GANG Programmer application, one of the two UUT’s programs successfully. The 2nd UUT intermittently fails with the ERROR 33
    • The wire length is less than 50cm.

With two devices, are they consistently able to program the devices after a second press of the GO button?

    • YES, both UUT’s program successfully whenever the GO button is pressed.
    • I am now using a brand new programmer that has just arrived. I will compare performance of both programmers & note any differences.

    Hope that clarifies the questions.

    Thanks

  • Rodney,

Thank you for the clarification! I wonder if one of the channels of the MSP-GANG is causing the issue. Please keep me posted once the customer tests out the brand new programmer. Has the customer tried programming a TI-Provided example code just to see if the problem might reside in the source code being flashed to the devices?

    Best regards,

    Matt

  • HI

    Customer sked

Do you know if the programmer supports a command line interface?

My C# test setup uses an ST_Link to program another device which I am using a command line interface to handle my programming.

    Thanks

    Rodney

  • Rodney,

The MSP-GANG can be controlled by firmware commands received through USB or its RS-232 serial port. Please refer to the MSP-GANG User's Guide Chapter 3 for more information.

    Best regards,

    Matt
