MSP430F6747: Related with ESD

Part Number: MSP430F6747

Hi,
If we use MSP430F6747IPZ, how do we design to protect ESD, due to MSP430F67xx family don’t have ESD robustness feature (refer to slaa666 , tidu817 and tidua02)? Do we need to add resistor/capacitor on each LCD pin?
Also, does this MSP430 have internal diodes or somethings to protect MSP430 from high volte ESD (e.g. ESD 35 kV)?
Please advise us.

Thanks and best regards,
M.HATTORI

  • Hello Hattori,

The MSP430F6747 does have some built-in ESD protection but it looks like the max rating is only 1kV, based on the ESD ratings of the datasheet.  As the application note and Ti-Designs mention, the MSP430F6747 was improved and can offer better ESD performance.  I would highly recommend moving to the MSP430F6747A device for these improvements.

As for designing a system with ESD considerations, we do have an app note that discusses these issues and suggests some best practices:  http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slaa530/slaa530.pdf

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    JD
