We have selected MSP430F5359 controller for our portable instrument development.

As device is portable our first selection criteria is low current consumption

in datasheet it is specified 295 μA/MHz at 8 MHz, 3.0 V, Flash Program

What is the meaning of above statement

is it if crystal is 1 MHz current consumption is 295 uA

and if 8 Mhz cyrstal is used it is 295 * 8 uA

please clarify

Hi Anushka,

Yes, you are right. 295uA/MHz is active power consumption.

And the standby current is only 2.2uA@3V.

For low power application development, we usually care more about standby power consumption.

F5359 Active mode at 8MHz MCLK with high frequency crystal total power consumption is around 2.6mA
Please refer to the below description on MSP430F5359 https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/msp430f5359.pdf

If you need the lower 8MHz active power MCU, I recommend FRAM based MSP430 device but the largest memory density is 256K bytes.
Please refer to FR5994 with 256KB FRAM DS: http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/msp430fr5994.pdf page 29, the active mode at 8MHz and 75% FRAM hit rate is ~1mA (1015uA).
