[FAQ] MSPCAPTDSNCTR: User interface text and graphic size too small on Windows PC's with 4K displays

Part Number: MSPCAPTDSNCTR

If you have a Microsoft Windows 10 PC with a 4K display and are working with TI's CapTIvate Design Center, Ultrasonic Sensing Design Center, or Energy Measurement Design Center software tools, than this post applies to you.

The onset of 4K displays on many new notebook PC's has led to some frustrating user experiences, with certain software packages not scaling their graphical interfaces correctly for the display and OS settings.  On some Windows 10 PC's with 4K displays and DPI scaling enabled, the aforementioned software tools which support several of TI's MSP430-based sensing and measurement products may start up without proper scaling applied, leading to font and graphic sizes which are very small and not easily read by the user.  If you are running an up-to-date version of the Java run time engine on your PC, you may not experience this issue.  But if you are running an older version, it is likely that you will encounter it.

To correct this issue, follow the steps below in Windows 10:

  1. Right-click the Desktop or Start Menu shortcut you are using to launch the tool, and select Properties.
  2. In the Properties window, select the Compatibility tab.
  3. Under Settings, select Change high DPI settings.
  4. In the new Properties window that opens, check the box labeled Override high DPI scaling behavior.
  5. In the same window, change the drop-down for Scaling performed by: to the System option.

After making these changes, launch the tool.  These steps cause the Windows system to apply the appropriate graphics scaling to the interface panels.
