MSP430F6779A: Using Series Resistor for LCD design to protect ESD

Refer Application Report "SLAA530–March 2012" figure 17 on page 20 and page19

"2.3.3 ESD Protection Using Series Resistor
Consider a system where an MSP430 IC is interfaced to an LCD that is susceptible to ESD (secondary or
residual ESD stress in the system). In this case, LCD pins represent the ESD entry points in the system;
so, it is recommended to place series resistors on the LCD pins. When an ESD event occurs in the
system, the series resistor limits the current that finally strikes the MSP430 I/O pin. The larger the value of
resistance, the lower is the residual current seen at the interface I/O pin."

My question is 

1. Which MCU is to use series resistor?

1.1 MSP430F6779A

1.2 MSP430F47187 REV A

1.3 MSP430F427 REV G

2. Why TIDM-3PHMTR-TAMP-ESD not used series resistor? refer "TIDU817–March 2015" schematic on page 42

  • Hi guy,

    ESD protection is to make your system more robust. You can add ESD diode, Cap, or resistor to limit the damage.

    ESD protection has different level. Mostly to do this, is because you need to pass ESD test.

    TIDM-3PHMTR-TAMP-ESD  is not a product, so it doesn't do any ESD test. It mostly to ensure the function not the stability.
