MSP430F155: Crystal frequency

Part Number: MSP430F155

Hi ,

The MSP430F155 works with max frequency 8Mhz as per datasheet, what happens if i connect more than 8Mhz crystal ,like 12Mhz or 16Mhz to MSP?

Regards

Nagaraj.

  • "Recommended Operating Conditions" [Ref data sheet (SLAS368G) p. 25] limits the crystal to 8MHz. This is a bit stronger than a limit on Fsystem. (Some MSP430 series allow you to use a faster crystal as long as you divide it down, but that's not what this Table says.)

Assuming you divide it down I'm not sure what would happen. The oscillator might fail to start up. It might be irregular ("stutter"). The clock multiplexer might malfunction [Ref User Guide (SLAU049F) Fig 4-1]. It might appear to work for a while but quit suddenly. It might work fine.

If you don't divide it down (Fsystem > 8MHz), even if the oscillator works the CPU will malfunction in obscure ways.
