MSP430F6746: Oscillator fault conditions

Part Number: MSP430F6746

Hi,

My customer is asking what are exact conditions which cause the crystal oscillator faults(XT1LFOFFG, XT1HFOFFG and XT2OFFG).
User’s guide just says “The crystal oscillator fault bits XT1LFOFFG, XT1HFOFFG, and XT2OFFG are set if the corresponding crystal oscillator is turned on and not operating properly.”

What “not operating properly” exactly means?
For example, if the crystal frequency is out of specific frequency range, the fault is generated?
If so, what is the frequency drift limit?
Or the fault is generated the crystal does not oscillate at all?

Thanks and regards,
Koichiro Tashiro

  • Hi Kohichiro, Thanks for your post!

there is only low-frequency crystal supported on MSP430F6746. we have frequency range spec which is 10-50kHz on MSP430F6746 DS. if crystal frequency is out of specific frequency range, the fault will not be generated. if the out-of-range frequency causes crystal stop. the fault will be generated. here, the “not operating properly” mainly means "crystal stop".
