MSP430F5340: abs max voltage to pin with a resistor in series

I understand the voltage abs max for any pin in the device is 4.1V. What happens to the reliability of the micro if a voltage above 4.1V is applied with a resistor in series? If the current is limited to less than 2mA, will the reliability be affected if a pin is exposed to say 5V or 12V for an extended period of time? Any differences with ADC pins?

    These questions are always difficult to answer. Our parts are robust, but we don't recommend or advise exceeding the absolute max values in the datasheet. If there's a need to do that, the device performance is not guaranteed, and the device will probably get damaged in some way (instantly or eventually). Customers can always choose to do this anyway and perform their own evaluation and testing if they are fine with the risk.

    If the ESD diode current is limited to +/-2mA, then the diodes won't be damaged. For more details, I would recommend referencing the ESD Diode Current Specification and MSP430 System ESD Troubleshooting Guide app notes.
