MSP-EXP430FR6989: EZFET firmware

Hello Maynard,

What do you mean the update fails?  Does it say failed, or does it just hang forever?  

What version of code composer studio are you using?  Please check for updates in the help -> about -> Installation details menu.

Typically, when the FET needs updating, CCS can do it in a matter of a minute or two, then it isn't needed until there is a tool update.  You can also try using Uniflash, as it should prompt for the update as well.

Thank you for your response. Below is the reply of customer.

"I don't understand the query. I am using the latest versions of code composer and energia and they both fail. I have also used an old version 6 of code composer. Both IDEs

use the same open source dll which is common to all MSP430 emulators. The update fails as shown in the screen grab already supplied. I am not sure which version of dll is being used, but I can find out. I have also identified a way of carrying out the cold boot by linking two points on the ezfet with a 100 ohm resistor at switch on."

The fact that the update can be ignored and the eZ-FET still communicates and programs makes it seem like the eZ-FET is not corrupted and is still operational.  In that case, a cold boot is not usually necessary.  

It seems like maybe something in the setup on the PC isn't working properly.  This is why I recommended installing the latest Uniflash to see if it can successfully update your launchpad: https://www.ti.com/tool/UNIFLASH 

If you have access to a different PC with the latest code composer, you could maybe also try that.

Customer have follow up question. Below is the details.

I have downloaded and used Uniflash 6.2.0. I have been able to examine memory on my FR4311 launchpad but it fails on the 6989 requesting a firmware update which fails.

I have enabled the log file and found it (ds.log).

It is rather large (150k).

Is there anything I should look for? I haven't yet used a different computer, but will do soon.

Additional information from customer. 

"I have used a different windows 10 computer with the latest uniflash but it still fails. I have found some documentation that implies that error numbers are output when failiures occur. I do not know how to see those error numbers."

This is not a typical issue, and I don't know what useful information to look for in the large log file.  Digging through some older E2E posts, I found two additional things to check.  

1. Can you check the USB port being used?  It seems like USB HUBs sometimes cause issues and maybe USB 2.0 ports work better: https://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/msp430/f/msp-low-power-microcontroller-forum/658355/ccs-msp-exp430f5529lp-ez-fet-lite-firmware-upgrade-issues 

2. I just received response from customer and according to them, the above link were not able to solve the issue.

Is there other work around that we could provide to customer?

I guess that they can directly connect another functional SBW / JTAG master to problematic EZ_FET master as slave, and directly flash it with last binary. I guess that all calibrated values for problematic EZ_FET master (MSP430F5xx/6xx) are stored inside TLV structure (ROM), so nothing unique will be lost, but someone from TI side must confirm this.
