question about Crystal of msp430f4260

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F4260

hello! I'm newbie. msp430f4260 doesn't has XT2, So I think the max external Crystal should be 32768K but not 8M.

am I right?

  • You are correct, the MSP430F4260 does not have a XT2 oscillator pair.  However, XIN/XOUT can be configured for low frequency mode (ie. 32768Hz) or high frequency mode supporting crystals up to 8MHz.

The Recommended Operating Conditions in the datasheet indicates this.

  • Thank you very much.

  • Actually I tried to set LFXT1 to a High Frequency mode that means I wanna make the MCU work at 8MHZ( I put a 8M Crystal between XIN and XOUT) But failed all the times.cause the msp430f4260 dose not have SEMLx bits, which means I can olny use DCOCLK as the system clock.

The XT1 crystal on these devices is meant solely for driving the FLL or ACLK.

I don't know why. My guess is tha tthis was the first implementation of the FLL module and someone thought the FLL would remove the need for an external crystal as MCLK/SMCLK source.

On the other MSPs, SMCLK can still not be sourced by XT1, you only have the choice between DCO and XT2 (which is pointless on devices without XT2).

Except for the FLL, I don't see much improvement here over the basic clock module from the 1x series. The basic clock module+ in the 2x series is  better here, as it offers XT1 as choice for SMCLK when the device does not have XT2.
