MSP-TS430PZ100A Load Capacitance for the MS1V-T1K Crystal

The kit comes with a 32KHz crystal. The packaging for the crystal calls out CL = 7pF. In the BOM found in the MSP430 Hardware Tools User Guide is references 12.5pF. My questions are:

1. Is there internal capacitance that is part of the crystal? If so is it 7 or 12.5pF?

2. Regardless, how am I to determine the amount of load capacitance I need ? I'm using an F47176. Do I even need any additional capacitance as is provided with the part?

Thanks,

Bob

  • Hi,

    The MS1V-T1K crystal is for 7pF, 9pF and 12.5pF. A typical reference should be MS1V-T1K 2.768KHZ +-20PPM 12. Are you sure that you have one with the reference MS1V-T1K 32.768KHZ +-20PPM 7PF?

Here you can find how to compute the external capacitors. The MSP430 that you are using has internal capacitors that you can use also. You can choose one of these values: 1 pF, 6 pF, 8 pF and10 pF.  Don’t forget the parasitic capacitance per pin, typically 2pF.
