Using CCSv5.3 on an MSP430F5515.

I would like to erase INFOD when I load my program. I have set the project Properties->Debug->MSP430 Properties to "Erase main and information memory", but the memory locations are not being erased when my program loads. Can someone see anything I may be doing wrong?

Hi Mike,

have you double checked that segment is not protected? Have you tried these ideas:

- the option below which includes protected memory

- the free flash programmer from elprotronic (www.elprotronic.com)

I'm trying to use CCS to erase a segment of flash when it loads. I'm not sure why I would want to use the elprotronic programmer.

Hi Mike,

the option below in your screen capture. Does info D get erased if you select that? I simply meant the elprotronic free programmer can be good to verify/double check things like this. Ie memory access etc. It has more memory options and info.

No. I selected "Erase main, information, and protected information memory". CCS did not erase D upon program load.

have you tried this on CCS. V5.3? It has other problems also.

Using CCS 5.3.0.00090, a MSP-FET430UIF v1.4a, MSP430.dll v3.3.0.6 on a MSP430F5528 I can't repeat the problem in that with "Erase main and information memory" selected INFOD is erased and programmed when a test program is downloaded.

(A MSP430F5528 is my closest device to your MSP430F5515).

Can you try enabling the CCS Debug Server Log, from Help -> CCS Support before starting the program download, and attach the log file.

I fill INFOD with 0xff (which is essentially the same as manually erasing the sector). When the program loads, the flash gets properly programmed since all memory locations start at 0xFF and programming a memory cell pulls bits to zero.

That log of the failure shows that CCS is making the following erase call into MSP430.dll:

0x00000EE8 103546903 3 MSP430 MSP C: MSP430_Erase( 1, 0x4400, 0x2 )
0x00000EE8 103547125 3 MSP430 MSP R: MSP430_Erase( 1, 0x4400, 0x2 ) = 0

The first parameter with the value 1 means an erase_type of:

ERASE_MAIN = 1, /**< Erase all MAIN memory */

(Look in the MSP430.dll source code in slac460 for the details).

Whereas when I downloaded a program which did erase the INFOD flash the following erase call was logged:

0x000006C8 545828 3 MSP430 MSP C: MSP430_Erase( 2, 0x4400, 0x2 )
0x000006C8 546578 3 MSP430 MSP R: MSP430_Erase( 2, 0x4400, 0x2 ) = 0

Where the first parameter with the value 2 means an erase_type of:

ERASE_ALL = 2, /**< Erase all MAIN and INFORMATION memory not including IP protected area */

Therefore, confirm that in the failure case the MSP430.dll isn't been told to erase the information memory, in spite of the Erase Options on the CCS Project Properties being set to "Erase main and information memory".

My overall CCS version is version 5.3.0.00090, and the installed software details are:

Are there any version number differences in the CCS5.3 installation which is failing?

Chester,

Thanks so much for all of the debugging help.

As has been the case many times before, when I get to the point that CCS is behaving strangely, I shut it down and restart it. This is what I just did. And now, without changing anything, CCS correctly erases INFOD and programs it with the correct values.

This is good news and bad news since we really don't know what happened.
