MSP430G2131: Complete DALI solution

Part Number: MSP430G2131
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDM-MSP-DALI, MSP430G2452

Hi team,

a customer is looking for complete Dali master-slave solution.

We have the SLAA422 solution with MSP430G2xx. The questions are:

- As it is not explicitly described in the app note, we assume that the SLAA422 / TIDM-MSP-DALI solution is DALI slave only capable. Is it right?

- From the hardware stand point, would it be possible to use the same PHY board and another bigger MCU to have the DALI master node?

- If the PHY board works also for master node, I guess we are still missing the software. Do we have any third party partner which can provide full the master software?

- From other thread I found, another option for the DALI master is the C2000's TMDSIACLEDCOMKIT. The hardware should support  DALI master according to the User's Guide document (with little modification), but software is also still missing.

Thanks.

  • Hi Leo,

You are correct in that the TIDM-MSP-DALI only provides the MSP430G2452 slave solution. A Tridonic DALI master was originally used to develop and evaluate the TI Design. The MSP430 family is not a suitable component for DALI master solutions, hence why no software has been developed and a PHY board was created to translate the output levels of a mater device. If a MSP430 device was both master and slave then the physical layer would not be necessary. You would need to contact the C2000 team regarding the missing TMDSIACLEDCOMKIT software.

  • Hi Ryan,

thanks for the reply. However I am still missing one answer:

From the hardware stand point, would it be possible to use the same PHY board from SLAA422 and another bigger MCU (maybe MSP432) to have the DALI master node?
  • Leo,

If the DALI master is another MCU with the same voltage level as the MSP430 slave then a level translation board is unnecessary. If you intend on altering from the MSP430G2452 then the same PHY board can be used for any MSP430 slave variant.

    Ryan
  • Hi Ryan,

DALI standard specifies the signal as 16V. So I think in any case we need to translate the signal to this level, right?
  • Yes Leo, please follow the DALI standard for both the slave and master portions of communication. Two PHY boards will therefore be required at each end of the line.

    Regards,
    Ryan
