MSP430G2153: current consumption of the timer

Hi!

Maybe someone can help me with the following issue.

I am interested in the current consumption of the embedded digital timer_A.

In the datasheet of MSP430G2153 (p.22), we can see the active mode supply current (330 uA @ 3V @ 1MHz). But it is no clear for me if such a current considers that the timer is either running or stop. Do you know that?

If the current consumption of the timer is not included in that value, do you know where I can find it in the datasheet?

  • Hi Ferran,

    Power consumption data is not specified for purely digital blocks (timers, communication, etc.) because they are very low-power modules and the power they do consume is included in the Active Mode and the LPMx current spec. Keep in mind however that when the digital peripheral is on it could be using an internal clock source (ACLK, SMCLK) which consumes power.

    With regard to your last comment, is this power consumed by the internal clock source reported?

    For example, in p. 22 of the datasheet we have a current consumption in active mode of 330 uA @ 1MHz - 3V. But if, in addition, the timer runs at 1 MHz using an internal clock, how much will be the overall current consumption? Is there any way to estimate that using the datasheet?

  • Ferran,

    ACLK can be sourced from the LFXT1 or VLO, same for SMCLK with the addition of the DCO. Active mode current vs DCO frequency is shown in Figure 3 of the Datasheet, LFXT and VLO current consumption numbers are minimal in active mode as shown by the Table and Figures on the next page (23) of the Datasheet. The timer does not consume any additional current past operation of the internal source clock.
