starting with ti MCUs

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3220S-LAUNCHXL, MSP-EXP430FR2311, LAUNCHXL-F28027

hi, sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place. I would like to start developing with ti mcus, but I don't really know what hardware(excluding caps, resistors etc) I need to have to start. I have some experience with pic mcus and the only hardware that I really need is a pickit. Is there a ti pickit equivalent?

  • Hi Daniel. TI made the LaunchPad series of development boards for exactly this purpose. You probably want to start with one of those because they have everything you need. The MSP-EXP430G2 is the most basic and probably the best way to start. But there is a whole range of boards that are very reasonably priced and great for getting started.

  • I disagree on G2 LP, that support only G2 family, not updatable, and with limited support. Any LP with eZ-FET Lite on board is open software / hardware, updatable, and support all MSP430 SBW devices. For example 5529 LP is much better choice than G2 LP.

  • thanks, I'll look into the msp. Can i use the MSP-EXP430G2 to work with the SimpleLink and c2000 MCUs? because they are the reason why I want to switch ( more for the simplelink than for the c2000).

    *edit*

I took a look at the simplelink LPs and I found the MSP432P401R my question now is can I program other similar simplelink MCUs? (I am assuming that the xds110-et in the board is what programs the MCU). I'm asking because I get the impression the the LPs are like arduinos, which is something that I don't want.

  • Hi Daniel,

If your application requires wireless communication, the SimpleLink MSP432 will be an excellent choice. However, this will really depend on your design requirements. Feel free to share them here and we can let you know if a microcontroller or something else is a better fit.

In your first post, you mentioned the PICKIT which is an in-circuit debugger for Microchip devices. The XDS110 is the on-board emulator/debugger on the MSP-EXP432P401R LaunchPad. You may be interested to know that our CC3220S-LAUNCHXL board has the same XDS110 on-board emulator.

If you just need a basic microcontroller, take a look at our FRAM-based MSP-EXP430FR2311 LaunchPad.

    Hopefully this helps.

    James

    MSP Customer Applications

  • Hello Daniel,

If you wish to work with C2000 then you should consider LAUNCHXL-F28027 (Launch Pad for Picolo-C2000 Series). Now for Simplelink which series are you considering? MSP432/ CC31xx/CC32xx/CC13xx/CC26xx ..

SimpleLink includes all above series and we offer very cost effective Launchpad for each series.
