MSP430F5418A: MSP430 graphics library image reformer artifacts

I am using the MSP-GRLIB with a MSP430F5418A attached to a Displaytech DT024DTFT QVGA display. All of the MSP-GRLIB functions work except the compressed images. The six images in the attached picture show the same image with 1, 4 and 8 bits per pixel uncompressed in the top row and 1, 4 and 8 bits per pixel compressed in the bottom row.

I do not believe this is caused by the MSP-GRLIB, but instead the MSP image reformer. Because, when I step thru the image function it writes the data from the image file correctly. Also I have manually corrected some of the artifacts in the image file and they display properly. Has anyone had this issue? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Update: This could be related. I have found an image that the Image reformer will output a blank file for. When the image reformer is set to 4 bits per pixel with compression the output is a blank file. The output is not blank for all the other settings.

Hi Darrel,

This is a current limitation with the image reformer tool. The alternative to create the .c file representation of the image are:

Manually create the .c file
Use image reformer and fix the output of imagereformer to remove any artifacts which may have been introduced during the color convertion or
Use the pnmtoc command line tool which is part Tiva Ware.

There is some information on how to use to the tool as part of tivaWare graphics library documentation just search for pnmtoc in the documentation below.

What type of compression is used in pnmtoc? Run length encoding?

Hi Darrel,

Yes, pnmtoc uses Run Length Encoding (RLE) to compress the images. One thing to be aware is that MSP430 graphics library currently only supports RLE4 an RLE8 variations.
