I'm a teacher, I teach programming and circuit design. I had plenty of experience in Arduino UNO, now I want to know TI board.

I want suggestion about which hardware and software I should have for learning.

Now, what I am sure of is only lcd - the one used regularly in UNO.

Hi Qi,

Do you mean that the LCD is requested on the board? Any other hardware peripheral is needed?

I would recommend "MSP-EXP430F5529LP".

This kit has on-board debugger, which means you would not need a separate debugger, and there are many written demo software for it. To start teaching with it, all that you would need is to download Code Composer Studio (which is free and has no restrictions) from this link: processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Download_CCS

Also, the MCU can be used for projects that are as simple as blinking an LED to projects that use RTOS.

As for the LCD, you should not have any problem using this kit to utilize a 16x2 LCD.

You may also be interested in the Sidekick Basic Kit for TI Launchpad. This kit will work with any TI LaunchPad and provides interesting hardware and code examples to get started with MSP430 Microcontrollers. In addition, if you're used to the Arduino environment, the code examples for this kit use the Energia IDE. This IDE is meant to emulate the Arduino experience but on the MSP430.

Hi Qi,

For LCD applications, I would recommend below LaunchPads for FRAM based MSP430 devices.

These two LaunchPads both have segment LCD and LED/Button/Crystal on board as well as the eZ-FET emulation for downloading and debugging. You may choose for the different main devices MSP430FR4133 or MSP430FR6989 for different memory size and peripherals which depends on your applications.

Yes and no.

I mean any other hardware peripheral is needed, and LCD could be on the board or separated.

Hi Qi,

It would be okay.

For the software example, you may go through with the board home page and user's guide for more details. I would give you quick suggestion for some key software package.

1. for FR5969 MCU on the main board, you may take: MSP-EXP430FR5969 Software Examples (Rev. D)

2. for the Sharp ® Memory LCD BoosterPack, you may take: out-of-box experience which provided with the MSP-BNDL-FR5969LCD uses the MSP-EXP430FR5969 LaunchPad and the 430BOOST-SHARP96 LCD BoosterPack.

Actually, there are two boards for the kit, all the related HW&SW&Doc should be found on the home page of them.

No. New TI LP's are with open source updatable eZ-FET Lite on board, that can program and debug any TI SBW device, beside the target on board chip. Just take care If you want to go by Energia way, to chose LP that is supported by Energia (CCS support all, Energia not).

No, this LP is too old (I don't understand why TI selling this at all), with old / slow / not updatable eZ-FET on board.

If you go on Energia web page (http://energia.nu), there is a list of supported LP's (pin mapping) on the right side. So anything from that list should be OK. For me the best MSP430 device ever is MSP430F5529, but this LP is without integrated display, so you can chose some of new FR LP's, depending on your requirements. All FRAM devices are with 20-bit CPUvX2, same as 5xx / 6xx flash family.

Hi Qi,

Energia should be a good choice for your class. But you have more boards supported by Energia than MSP-EXP430G2.

You could access to Energia by two ways: Energia standalone and TI CCS Cloud

1. Energia standalone could support below MSP430 LaunchPads by default.

2. TI CCS Cloud could support more boards and no need to download anything on your local PC.

I would suggest an ARM-based board, assuming that the students are learning this for employment purposes. MSP432 launchpad + CCS offers a fairly powerful yet low cost combo.

there are boards out there that uses an ARM chip and with Arduino physical interface.
