MSP-GANG: MSP Gang Programmer MSP430F5437 error 68

Part Number: MSP-GANG
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5437, , MSP430F5437A

Hi,

some trouble prograaming the MSP430F5437 via BSL with the Gang Programmer.

ERROR 68:  FBSL initializiation error.

The cable length is 150mm. The connection should be ok.

Intersesting would be the meaning of error 68.

regards Dietmar

  • Hello,

Are you using the latest version of MSP-GANG? If not, I would recommend updating. The following thread may also be helpful.

  • Here's another thread that has some good information. Can you try reducing the BSL speed? I'm not sure if Interactive Mode will let you or not (check the COM drop down menu at the bottom right of the MSP-GANG GUI), but Script Mode will allow you to change the BSL speed. See Section 4.2.34 in the MSP-GANG User's Guide.

  • Thank you for your quick reply!

We use the latest Software from the TI homepage.

Tommorow I will check the reduction of speed

  • Hello,

Another team member (Cameron LaFollette) pointed out that your issue may be caused by a mismatch between the device selected in the GUI (F5437A) versus your device (F5437). Change to the matching device and try to program again.

  • Hi James,

thank you for your help but just to clearify- it is the first time we have to program the MSP via BSL for one customer in production.

So we know exactly that we have the MSP430F5437A.

It is not possible to change the speed in the GUI.

After all your hints and links I will send Elprotronic a message.

I will keep you in touch.

    regards

Thanks for the additional details. If you program the devices via the 4-wire JTAG or 2-wire SBW interface, you can control the speed in the GUI using the Interactive Mode. If BSL is absolutely required for programming, you can learn more about the Script Mode which should allow you to slow down the speed.

Excellent! Thanks for clarifying. A mismatch between what's selected in the GUI and the actual device would most likely cause issues.

  • Hello Dietmar,

I'm not sure if you've had a chance to contact Elprotronic yet or not, but I wanted to share some additional details in the meantime.

From what I've learned, the BSL speed can't be controlled by the user. After the BSL is invoked, the communication starts at 9600 baud. When communication is successful (e.g. correct password is used), then a small application named Fast BSL (FBSL) is loaded into the RAM of the target device. This application handles further communication at a higher speed of approximately 150000 baud via SPI. Now, the length of your cable should be fine, but perhaps there's excessive capacitance on the RX and TX lines.

Basically, Error 68 means that the FBSL application was not started successfully. Did you happen to check if the correct password was used?

    James

  • Hello James,

till now there is no response of elprotronic- I'll try it again.

The PW should be o.k. .

    Dietmar

  • Hi,

    some information from elprotronic:

    no PW-problem

    MSP430F5437A is supported

It seems to be a problem with the BSL-lines (filters, caps, etc. )

  • Hello Dietmar,

Thanks for the update! I'm glad to hear that Elprotronic got back to you. Please keep me updated if you confirm that it was capacitance, noise, etc. on the BSL lines causing the issue.

    James
