CCS/BOOSTXL-BATPAKMKII: Battery Fuel Gauge reports errors after a minute or two

Greetings.

I am using the MKII battery booster pack with a MSP432 Launchpad (red).  I am running Code Composer Studio v7.4 on an iMac.  I shorted JP6 since the battery is always attached and will be built into my embedded device.  When run as per the instructions, the serial terminal shows the information the example provides, updating the battery data about once per second for awhile, about a minute or so, and then errors out.  In other words, "Error Reading Design Capacity" etc. on every line, clearly updating once per second with all errors.  If I go through several reset-button/toggle switch gyrations, it will start showing battery data again.  It errors out again in a minute or so.

The point I am making here is that it shows this behavior with only the hardware and software provided by TI.  How do I get it to keep doing its job all day in my actual embedded device?

    1. Which SimpleLink SDK version are you using?
    2. Are you running RTOS or no-RTOS code?
    3. If you try the debugger what does the debugger show for the data fields?

    Thank you for your quick response. I am using SimpleLink SKD 1.60.0.12 in CCSv7.4. I got the batpakmkii example from Resource Explorer very recently. It is boosts_batpakmkii_fuelgauge_MSP_EXP432P401R_nortos_ccs.

    OK got the example in the latest SimpleLink SDK 2.10.00.04 in CCSv8. I would try the example and see what the issue may be.

    The launchpad team says there is an issue with the example program and will be fixed at the next SDK release.

    Hi kel,

    Thank you for your reply.  May I know what the fix is before the next SDK release?  We are trying to get boards built soon, but can't until we know that this is going to work.  If we need to find another battery solution, we need to know sooner rather than later.

    I think I have another problem, in addition to that one. When I first tried the battery booster pack, I plugged it into the Launchpad, ran the example, watched for a few seconds and concluded that it worked. Then I ported the example code into my own project, shorted JP6 since my embedded device will always have the battery attached, and removed the code that deals with JP6. It worked just fine, briefly, and after awhile started reporting errors. So I went back to the pure example code and this time sat and watched it for awhile. Sure enough, it exhibits the same behavior. It works well...but only for a few minutes. It will not be possible to toggle switches and reset the device every time I want to check the battery, so I hope Amit and his colleagues will be able to find the problem.

    Hello Holly,

    I have been running the example from SDK 2.10 for about 2 minutes and there is no corruption I see on the COM port.

    I have connected the LaunchPad as is with the Booster Pack. The only thing additional is J6 jumper is populated and I have not connected the USB charging cable on the Battery Booster Pack. Attached is my log file for the COM port. each print is at about 1 sec interval.

    Hi Amit,

    Sorry for the delayed reply; I was out of town for most of last week.  Did you stop after two minutes or did you let it run until the error messages appear?  It is absolutely consistent here.  I haven't timed it precisely, but every time I run the MKII battery example it will eventually stop displaying measurements and start displaying error messages instead.

    There is one exception.  I shut everything down when I left town last week, and this morning when I rebooted everything and tried it again, it worked for a longer time, at least half an hour.  I had an appointment so I left it running and when I came back it was sending the error messages again, only I don't know when it finally started to error out.  From then on, it error out after a few minutes.  Perhaps it has something to do with rebooting CCS, I wondered, so I shut down and restarted CCS to see how it would behave.  I still have the error messages instead of measurements after a minute or so.

    I believe so it was 2 minutes of testing. Another thing you can do is to disable suspend of COM ports on when going to sleep. Also which Serial COM Port application are you using? I would suggest TeraTerm as I have found it to be more stable.

    Hi Amit,

    I replied to the email you sent about disabling the suspension of COM ports when the computer goes to sleep, but it bounced.  I develop on an iMac, so I am using the built-in terminal utility, with the built-in screen utility, to view the UART messages coming from the example code.  I have also used excellent software called Serial, and get the same results with it.  My computer has not gone to sleep by the time the error messages start showing.  I am concerned that this may have something to do with I2C errata, although it looks like the example code has tried to incorporate the workarounds suggested in the errata.  Or could it be a UART bug, perhaps?

    Hi Amit,

    I do have access to a borrowed Surface Pro 4 running Windows 10, so I tried running the battery pack example from there and it works.  There are several potential culprits, though.  There is the obvious PC vs. Mac difference, although TI purports to support developing on a Mac so I would expect it to work there anyway.  Also, I am using an older version of CCS and an older version of the SimpleLink SDK.  

    I decided to try downloading the latest versions of the software (even though this tends to be a bad idea in the middle of a development project) and try it all again on my Mac.  Alas, shortly after I clicked on the bug icon, CCSv8 crashed.  I thought I would try a different example program to run, just to see if it is the particular example causing the problem, but when I restart CCS and turn to the Resource Explorer I am told that "Resource Explorer encountered a problem.  Please close and reopen Resource Explorer..."   And so on.  I'm still working on it.

    I will let you know what happens.

    Hi Amit,
    All I get now is the "Clearing BIE in Operation Configuration" message, and no measurements, no matter how I push the reset button or toggle the connection switch. As far as I can tell, it still doesn't work properly on a Mac even with the latest software.

    Hello Holly,

    Seems like something went wrong with the Battery Booster Pack. Can you confirm if the switch is in connected position and J6 is still populated? Do you remember if you did a hot plug of the battery when the LP was connected?

    You are right. The switch is connected and JP6 is still populated. I went back to the Windows machine to double-check that the battery booster pack is still working, since it did work correctly there before, and it is not. I get gibberish in the Tera Term window once per second now. Apparently the timer is working but the I2C/UART communication is not. I did remove the battery booster pack from the Launchpad and then reinstall it later because I wanted to work with a different booster pack. I never do any of that with the Launchpad connected, though. Maybe it didn't like being manhandled.

    Thank you for all your diligent help with my battery booster pack issue. I still don't know if it would work while connected to the iMac now that it has all the latest software, since the battery pack itself is only partly working.

    Still waiting to hear what TI intends to do to get this to work on a Mac. TI is closing the thread because they haven't heard anything further, but it would be up to TI to come up with something.

    Actually, looking back on this thread, I see that the current issue is a bit different than the original post Namely, that you are having difficulty with the Mac-side interface of this example. (That, and the other problem of CCSv8 crashing on the Mac. Could I ask you to re-post this new issue so that we can track these issues separately (since different groups will be handling each issue)?

    Hi Holly,

    I am currently doing a project using BOOSTXL-BATPAKMKII, here is what I found that may help you.

    1. Use the example program as base from the latest SDK.
    2. I found a bug in the example program from code review. I need to verify it further. Specifically this code line below.

    /* Write new taper rate */
    if (!BQ27441_command(BLOCK_DATA_CHECKSUM, new_chksum, 1000))

    3. You need to follow the flowchart in updating the gauge configuration parameters that can be found at "Quickstart Guide for BQ27441-G1". It is slightly different from the example program. But, I recommend to follow it as is because I have seen open source code that used the same guide.
    4. Lastly you need to put a 10k ohm resistor across R9 as recommended by TI Engineer here. This is for the charging issue.

    P.S. Actually after cross referencing with the BQ27441-G1 Technical Reference doc, A lot of the code is wrong. The BQ27441-G1 need to be unsealed in order for some registers to be written. But, the example program did not put the unseal and seal code.

    Hi Kel,

    Thank you for your thoughtful reply.  Ultimately, it turned out that the battery booster pack example works on the Windows machine (after I gave it another squeeze to seat the headers on the pins properly), but not on the Mac version of CCS v8.  There, it reports errors after awhile, as per my original post.

    I'm glad you replied because I am sure the suggestions you have provided will help other people who come looking for answers to their problems with the battery fuel gauge.  We, on the other hand, have decided not to use the BQ27441-G1 for our project after all.

    Hi,

        If your taking too long to make the BQ27441-G1 work, then it is good decision to move on to other options.

        Anyway, for my project I resolved all issues for the BOOSTXL-BATPAKMKII. The BQ27441 code library in this project might be of some use to you in the future.

        

       For your Mac version of CCSV8 problem I suggest you ask help at CCS forum.
