Thanks for the info. I haven't looked at the specs for this kit but is there a way to use an external crystal on this board vs the internal one (soldering one somewhere on board)?

Yes, you can solder an external crystal to Q1 or Q2 on this board. Please refer to Figures B-78 and B-79 and also Table B-40 (for the BOM that includes the part numbers) in the MSP430 Hardware Tools User's Guide.
