MSP-FET430UIF: Steps to flash firmware to MSP-FET430UIF.

Hi,

MSP-FET430UIF is showing Interface communication error. I am expecting firmware in the chip may crashed. The followings errors I got when I am trying with FET

1. With XDS GDB Agent, I got the error as

MSP430               Waiting for client
MSP430               Client connected...Connecting to Target
Found USB FET at COM10
...Initializing Update Bootloader
...Erasing firmware memory section
...Program new firmware
...Exit Update Bootlader and reboot firmware
...Initializing Update Bootloader
...Erasing firmware memory section
...Program new firmware
........Exit Update Bootlader and reboot firmware
...Update was successfully finished
   MSP430 Error :Unknown device
Connection failed...exiting

2. With IAR workbench it is showing as "Interface communication error"

3. With FET-Pro430 Elprotonic Inc, the error shows as

=====================================
JTAG communication initialization.... failed
Verifying Security Fuse .................... failed
--------------- FAILED !!! -----------------

So I am requesting plz help in flashing the new firmware for my MSP-FET430UIF

Hey Mahesh,

It's hard to tell, but based on the errors, it sounds like the problem is on the JTAG connect between the UIF programmer and the Target MSP430 MCU, not between the PC and the programmer.

Is the target board powered from the UIF or externally?
Do you have any other known working boards you could try programming to see if the programmer is working as expected?

In my experience with the UIF programmer, "Unknown device" errors are almost always related to proper power configuration. Also, if your MSP430 device has the "TEST" pin, insure you are providing it though the JTAG connection. See section 2.1 of the document below:

Thank you for the reply
I got new msp-fet430uif, the power led is not blinking and it is showing "interface communication error". This programmer is working when I was tested with the merchant.

I am connecting external usb power for the msp430f5438a development board. Now the programmers are not showing the power led blinking when connected to my laptop.

Hey Mahesh,

Is the power LED staying on when connected to a PC?

The MSP-FET430UIF LED behavior is described in section 5.7.2 of the MSP Debuggers User Guide. The only time the Power LED Flashes is when the UIF is being updated. This typically will only happen the first time the programmer is connected to the debugging program.

Which MSP430F5438A EVM are you using? The target socket board or the experimenter's board?

I'm guessing you are using the MSP-EXP430F5438 Experimenter's board with USB interface. Can you check the power switch in the top left corner of the board? Also double check the Jumper configurations for the EVM. The hardware is chapter 4 of the EXP users guide.

The power led is not ON when it is connected to the PC.
Yes, I am using MSP-EXP430F5438A experiment board.
The power switch is connected as USB.

Hello Mahesh,

What status lights are showing on the MSP-FET430UIF?

Is the MSP-EXP430F5438 being powered over USB? Can you see any LED or the LCD receiving power?

Hey Mahesh,

Thanks for the update. It does seem that the original UIF may have been damaged or the firmware was somehow corrupted, maybe during an update. If the latter, typically it is updated when connected to CCS or the elprotronic tool.

I think a new programmer was the best solution. Let us know if you run into any other issues.
