MSP-EXP430FR6989: Download links for http://www.ti.com/MSPdrivers _still_ broken; cant use eval board without it.

Part Number: MSP-EXP430FR6989
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSPDS

The links for these drivers is _still_ broken for all but the windows driver, in spite of TI's claim that it's fixed. I pursued this with tech support asking for the OS-X driver, and he sent me the WINDOWS driver and tried to say it's fixed. No,

So, he sent me the binary for OS-X, but the link is still broken. Also still broken for Linux. Great, that fixes it for me only. What about everyone else? I don't want to be the _only_ person using the driver for obvious reasons.

I expected better from TI.

  • Hi Luke,

Thanks for your post. I'm sorry you're having trouble with these links. I tried downloading the drivers for Windows, OS X, and Linux this morning and everything worked fine. Before my reply this evening, I tried again through both the product page links and the email links and got the following error message.

Looking at the link at the bottom of the related approval emails, I clicked it and got a notification that there was site maintenance going on.

    http://software-dl.ti.com/msp430/msp430_public_sw/mcu/msp430/MSP430_FET_Drivers/latest/?DCMP=ep-mcu-msp-en

I'll try again tomorrow morning to see if I can download everything again like I did this morning. In the meantime, you should be able to update the drivers by loading a code example on the board using Code Composer Studio (CCS) IDE. Typically, a pop-up window will ask you to update the debugger firmware before proceeding to program the target if the debugger firmware is outdated.

    Regards,

    James

  • Hi Luke,

I've reached out to the team who owns these drivers to see if we can resolve this issue. I don't have a timeline at the moment but will update the thread when I hear back from them.

    Regards,

    James

  • Hi Luke,

Apologies for the delay here. I've been working with the teams involved with these tools and pages, and it's been slower than expected. Basically, the issue with downloading these drivers stems from the short www.ti.com/mspdrivers link and how it gets redirected to our www.ti.com/tool/MSPDS page. If a user goes directly to the MSPDS page, they can successfully download the drivers there.

For collateral that may include the mspdrivers link, we're evaluating if we need to update them depending on whether or not the redirect issue can be fixed. For now, we just recommend using the MSPDS page.

    Regards,

    James

  • Thanks for looking into it James. It seems like the installation instructions also need updating for Mac OS X and Linux. In order for customers to be protected against viruses and critical bugs, we are required to be on the current version of the operating system. If the tools aren't fully supported on current operating system releases, then they aren't really supported.

  • Hi Luke,

We've resolved the issue with the www.ti.com/mspdrivers link. I've tested this on two different browsers (made sure to clear my cookies first) and was able to download the drivers successfully. Feel free to confirm this on your side.

Regarding macOS support, our software team confirmed that macOS Mojave is supported by CCS v9.1.0, even sharing a screenshot with me showing an active debug session with a MSP-EXPFR6989 LaunchPad. For the upcoming macOS Catalina, there are some things they are working through but are hoping to support it with the upcoming CCS v9.2.0 release.

I'm going to mark this thread resolved since your original question was related to MSP Drivers. If you have any other issues, please feel free to create a new thread. Thanks for using E2E.

    Regards,

    James
