I understand that TI MSP430 BSL won't support SPI based firmware upgrade. Does that also mean customer can't update the BSL to support SPI based firmware upgrade? Is this because MSP430Fx device store BSL in ROM or is it because of other reason? I am trying to upgrade the firmware using SPI from one launchpad to another. using SPI.

Please confirm.

The document on that thread says "SPI with CC110x for OTA download support" .

Can't we just use SPI interface to download firmware from one mSP430 to another or from a host machine to MSP430 target without using CC1101 RF Transceiver?

You can use SPI interface to download firmware from one mSP430 to another or from a host machine to MSP430 target without using the RF transceiver; however this implementation is not supported by MSPBSL and would have to be custom written by the customer.

Okay Thank!

Is there any reference code or document on this? Earlier when I contacted TI customer support, they mentioned firmware upgrade using SPI ( without using the RF transceiver) is not supported on MSP430 and it's not possible even with custom MSPBSL.

There is no reference code on this since it is not natively supported by our provided software. You are correct that it is not possible with MSPBSL. You would have to make a custom main memory bootloader using the tools provided in SLAA600D (MSPBoot – Main Memory Bootloader for MSP430™ Flash Microcontrollers)
