EVM430-F6736: calibrator.exe does not start and no error appears

Part Number: EVM430-F6736
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EM-DESIGN-CENTER, TIDM-1PHMTR-ESD

Dear Sir/madam,

I want to connect the GUI of the EVM430-F6736. So as described in "SLAA517E-May 2012 REvised August 2015" on page 20 and 21, I have decompressed the zip folder and started the application. Instead of the window on page 21 with the program, only a console opos up and closes again immeditely. No error message, nothing ! It is frustrating.

Why doesn't the file calibrator.exe work? I use Windows

I have looked that there is a serial connection:

The COM7 is connected to the current meter.

Furthermore, the files are all decompressed:

When I run "calibrator.exe", then just a black window pops up for milliseconds and closes immediately. When I run this from the console, then also another black window pops up. No error message is visible, nothing. What am I doing wrong?

Help is very much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Best regards

Patrick

  • Hi Patrick,

I'm sorry you're having an issue with the GUI. You'll need to update the meter COM port in the 'calibration-config.xml' file found in the SLAA517 > GUI > GUI2 folder. Save the file and try to re-open the GUI. It should stay open now. These directions can be found in Section 7.3.1 in the User's Guide for the TIDM-1PHMTR-ESD design. I'm not sure why they weren't included in SLAA517. We plan on updating these designs to showcase the newer Energy Measurement Design Center (EMDC) GUI and software library (MSP-EM-DESIGN-CENTER).

While EMDC does make evaluation and development much easier than our older GUI and IAR-based library, it's not as easy to connect on the hardware side. You'd need to solder two wires for the UART TX and RX onto the top of the EVM. EMDC communication uses USB HID rather than CDC, so the on-board RS-232 port can't be used unfortunately.

If you'd like to learn more about EMDC, here's a link to the training videos.
