MSP430F5505: MSP430F5525 Rev.F BSL

Part Number: MSP430F5505
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET, MSP430F5529

Hello,

Customers are using MSP430F5505IRGZ (VQFN) to invoke BSL from the MSP430 application (Jump to 0x1000) to launch BSL and perform FW Update.

Although it did not work with the Rev.F device, it seems to have worked after switching to the Rev.D device, and I think there may be a problem with the Rev.F BSL.
Is there any information about Rev.F BSL?

Best regards,
DDdoor

  • Hello,

Please see the MSP430F5505 Device Erratasheet (Rev. AA). There are two BSL bugs in Rev F and have been fixed after Rev E.

  • Hello Winter Yu,

    Thank you for your reply.
    Errata confirmed.
However, on the contrary, it works with Rev.D, but if the customer replaces it with MSP430F5505 Rev.F, there are about 3 boards that do not work with BSL.
    3/3 NG (100%).
The customer thinks the BSL has a problem, what do you think?

    Best regards,
    DDdoor

  • Hello Winter Yu,

Would you please answer this matter?

In addition, BSL does not start if it is revision F even with the method using Blank RESET vector or PUR pin. For this reason, maybe there is something wrong with the revision F BSL.

    Best regards,

    DDdoor

  • Hello DDdoor,

Sorry for the late response due to holiday.

I'm checking with Dietmar if any other existed bugs related to your issue.

  • DDoor,

can you please read out the BSL memory and send the memory dump to us ensuring the correct BSL image is programmed?
    Was this already verified?
Is customer using somehow LPM.x5 in his application?

How is the application supplied? Via USB or separately was it checked if any of the USB ERRATAs might apply e.g. USB9?

  • Hello Dietmar Walther,

    Thank you for your reply.

The result of the dump (attached) was compared with the BSL file (BSL_00.08.88.39.txt) to check if there was any difference, but they were consistent.
Customers do not use the method of returning from LPM.x5.
They are also considering a workaround for the USB9 errata.
I am waiting for contact to see if the problem can be improved.

    Best regards,
    DDdoor

  • Hello Dietmar Walther,

    Let me summarize once.

    ■ Content of inquiry
With Rev.F of MSP430F5505, BSL does not start by any of the following methods.
-BSL activation from PUR pin trigger → NG
-Start BSL from Blank Reset Vector → NG
-Start BSL from software → NG

When a customer replaces Rev.F on this customer board with a Rev.D device, BSL invokes

As a result of subsequent research, the following is known.

-When the customer dumps the BSL part of MSP430F5505 Rev.D and overwrites it on the Rev.F IC, the PC recognizes it as a BSL device.
-If the customer writes the Rev.F BSL FW to the Rev.D IC, the PC will not recognize it as a BSL Device.
-When the customer writes the BSP of MSP430F5505 Rev.F to the MSP430F5529USB Experimenter's Board (MSP-EXP430F5529), it is recognized as a BSL Device.
    -USB9 workaround verification.
When the customer tried USB_setup () including usb_init () and tried it, USBPWRCTL changed to 0xA48. And BSL does not start.
-BSL can be started if the customer board and PC are connected while MSP-FET is connected.
-Customers do not use BSL after returning from LPM5.
-When data is read from the Rev.F board, the data matches BSL_00.08.88.39.txt.

What can we think from this result?

    Best regards,
    DDdoor

  • DDoor,

thanks for detailed information one dedicated point is important to me I think I found now for what I searched.

The problem is most probably BSL6 we had your case on another customer years ago which resulted in BSL6. Customer should follow BSL6 workaround and then it should work.

  • Hello,Dietmar Walther

    Thank you for your reply.

I want to confirm to you one.
Certainly, in the case of MSP430F5529, it seems that BSL6 errata exists,
Customer is RevF on MSP430F5505, but this device seems to have solved BSL6.

Still, is the solution for this case still to use BSL 00.07.85.36.?

    Best regards,
    DDdoor

  • DDoor,

you are right F5505 is not F5529 and I did experiments in the past on our F5510 RevF devices with BSL and it worked.

The BSL 00.08.88.39 version is a follow up version and should have all improvements from 00.07.85.36.But for sanity check did customer tried 00.07.85.36 to see if it works?I also checked our internal tracking tools and based on this F5509 RevF should really be not affected by BSL6 so not sure if there is any other issue with HW.

    Can you share the schematic?

  • Hello Dietmar Walther,

Errata's BSL6 workaround said it was starting with version 00.07.85.36.,
But I did not find the same version of the BSL file I downloaded, so I asked the customer to try using BSL_00.07.88.38.txt.
The result was NG. Also, I got the schematic, can I send it directly by email?

    Best regards,
    DDdoor

  • DDoor,

yes please lets go to mail communication for this sensitive data. Also pls share customer name, application type and business data to make the right judgements on priority on TI site.

    Thanks
