CCS/EVM430-CAPMINI: Develop on CAPMINI using CAPTIVATE-PGMR?

Part Number: EVM430-CAPMINI
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CAPTIVATE-PGMR, , MSP-FET

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

I want to know if I can develop on the EVM430-CAPMINI using the CAPTIVATE-PGMR.

The CAPMINI docs  say: "To create user’s own code or demo, use the on-board Spy-bi-wire debug port."

ref: http://software-dl.ti.com/msp430/msp430_public_sw/mcu/msp430/CapTIvate_Design_Center/latest/exports/docs/users_guide/html/CapTIvate_Technology_Guide_html/markdown/ch_evm_CAP_MINI.html

The CAPTIVATE-PGMR has Spy-Bi-Wire Interface.

Seems I could set it up like this:

COMPUTER <---USB---> CAPTIVATE-PGMR<---SPY-bi-wire --->EVM430-CAPMINI

However,  Section 2.3 of the CAPMINI docs (http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slau784/slau784.pdf?ts=1590212413389

"You must use a hardware debug tool to program the MSPFR2512 MCU. The MSP-FET is a powerful
debug probe for application development and supports all MSP430 microcontrollers. The eZ-FET is a
powerful onboard emulator and is on LaunchPad™ development kits."

  • I believe you can. I have a CAPMINI that I had in mind to program with a Launchpad. Based on the schematics I have no reason to think I won't succeed, but it has been sitting (buried) on my desk for a few months and I haven't gotten to it.

You could be the first. I think the only cost would be populating the RST/TEST pins on the CAPMINI's "bridge" header block (or finding pin-clips that will grab into the holes). I don't know whether/how to tell CCS about it, but it usually figures things out.

  • Hallo Leif,

    that's correct.

If you have a CapTIvate programmer, just connect the PIN10 on the programmer board to Test and PIN9 to reset. (plus GND and VCC)

You can directly program from the CCS.

You need to populate the missing GND/Test/RST pins on the board. I have tested and it works.

Please have also a look into the tech guide LINK for the CAPMINI board and the programmer.

Let me know if that works.

  • Thanks Kostas.

I've implemented your directions and have had success programming the CAPMINI board using Code Composer and with additional connections, communication with Captivate Design Center.

I found that using wire wrap worked well for connecting the two boards.

    DEVELOP CAPMINI USING CODE COMPOSER:

Connect GND/TEST/RST between CAPMINI and CAPTIVATE-PROGRAMMER

    COMMUNICATE WITH CAPTIVATE DESIGN CENTER:

Connect TXD and RXD between CAPMINI and CAPTIVATE-PROGRAMMER

Later, I hooked up SDA, SCL, and IRQ in case I need them in the future as I become more familiar and involved with the CAPTIVATE development process.

  • Hi Leif,

happy to hear that it works. Hope you can find an application to implement that.

As it is answered, please hit the resolved button to close the thread.
