MSP432P401R: power light cannot be turned on.

Part Number: MSP432P401R

One of my students just started working on the MSP432 launchpad with Energia for the Lab class. After loading a few basic examples, the power (green) LED went off while the red LED still flashes, and the computer could not see the device under serial port anymore. It was able to detect the board before. He tried to unplug and replug the USB cables, uninstall and reinstall Energia and the driver, nothing works. Any idea what's going on and how to fix this?

  • Hello Shasha,

Sorry for the delay.  The Red LED at the bottom of the board is controlled by the target MSP432, so it's still running.  But there should be green LED which is part of the XDS110 on the top half of the launchpad.  My understanding is that this is not a power LED, but shows when the XDS110 is recognized by the driver on the PC.  If the board is not showing up on the PC control panel any more, than this LED will also be off.

This issue is usually either driver-related on the PC or it's possible that the XDS110 firmware was somehow corrupted (usually, by unplugged the board while the XDS was going through a firmware update.)  You can try a different PC or a different Launchpad to try and check the PC's drivers.  There is an XDS110 troubleshooting section here that provides some debugging and fixing methods.

it is also possible that the board itself was damaged somehow, but is very rare.

    Thanks,

    JD
