Using ICDI of EK-LM4F232 for EK-LM4F120XL

Hi all,

i just broke the ICDI micro USB connection on my Stellaris Launchpad EK-LM4F120XL, and this is the second time (i find this micro USB connection is really prone).

I am thinking to use the ICDI of EK-LM4F232 for the Launchpad.

So first question: is this possible?

If yes, which pins should i connect? i tried to connect the MDL-ADA2 adapter to the EK-LM4F232 J6 JTAG connector, and connect the following lines to the EK-LM4F120XL Launchpad:

- GND (MDL-ADA2 pin 8) <-> EK-LM4F120XL GND connector on bottom left of the board

- TDI  (MDL-ADA2 pin 5) <-> EK-LM4F120XL TDI pad

- TDO  (MDL-ADA2 pin 13) <-> EK-LM4F120XL TDO pad

- TMS (MDL-ADA2 pin 7) <-> EK-LM4F120XL TMS pad

- TCK  (MDL-ADA2 pin 9) <-> EK-LM4F120XL TCK pad

- SRST  (MDL-ADA2 pin 15)  <-> EK-LM4F120XL RESET pad

 for power i connect the +5V pin of EK-LM4F232 directly to +EK-LM4F120XL VBUS connector at bottom left of the board.

But this doesn't work.

Thanks for any insight on this problem.

  • I'm derelict in schematic review - operating strictly from memory (4-5 months past) when we used EK-LM4F232.  (have long had our custom LX4F pcb)

    As I recall - the 10 pin mini JTAG header on EK-LM4F232 (really is LX4F232) does route to the "work-horse" LM4X on this board - not to the LX4F serving as ICDI.  Our group has paid IAR - never use ICDI - far prefer speed/robustness of J-Link - and indeed we married the J-Link 20 pin cable to "MDL-ADA2" - which we inserted into EK-LM4F232 - to enable debug & programming.  Again - this from my memory - you must confirm w/schematic review.

    Originally - TI did not recommend using EK-LM4F232 (really LX4F232) as you hope.  Subsequently they've "bit" relented - a scan of related posts may prove helpful.  If my memory serves - the correct JTAG signals do appear as valid, JTAG outputs - on the mini, 10 pin header on EK-LX4F232.  However - to harvest these - you'd need to employ the (flawed) USB connector to transact w/the LX4F serving as ICDI.  And you must find some means to isolate the "work-horse" LX4F on this Eval board.

    Not  entirely "thrilled" w/this contribution - hopefully provides some guidance/value (while you await additional)  - you must seriously review Eval board's schematic - along w/many past posts - this subject...

  • Hi Leo,

    The EK-LM4F232 does not support debug out.  Do you have another Stellaris EK you can use?

    Regards,

    Sue

    Thanks for the clarification. In this case, i will try to find another one (hopefully i will not break it as the other two).

  • Sue,

    just to verify this once again. Is there any other board i can use to program Launchpad? I see that for example DK-LM3S9D96 support debug out, but i guess this won't work for LM4F devices, right?

    Appears that requested, "any insight" has also been deemed "NRND..."

  • Hi cb1,

    thanks also for your input, i didn't mean to be rude. It's just Sue's reply was directly to the point.

    Thanks again for your reply.

  • Hi Leo,

    The DK-LM3S9D96 can be used with the EK board.  Just follow the instructions on page 23 of the board user's manual.

    Regards,

    Sue
