Why not TI ESD protection on DK-TM4C129X Ethernet?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD2E1B06, TLK110

Why not use 2 x TPD2E1B06 instead of 1 x Semtech SLVU2.8-4 on the DK-TM4C129X?

Customers refer to this reference design in order to help them with their Ethernet board.  They would like to use the TI ESD parts, but wanted to understand what we could recommend here.

  • Jason,

The Semtec part was a carry over recommendation from the EPHY IP development team during the initial design of the DK-TM4C129X.  I am told this was the standard recommendation before TI had a comparable option, going back to recommendations for use with the TLK110, which the EPHY within the TM4C129X is based upon.

Based upon testing with our own internal ESD verification boards, we are comfortable recommending the TPD4E1B06DCKR device in place of the Semtec part.  Please note a key difference in that the Semtec part goes between RJ45 connecter and magnetics, while the TPD4E1B06DCKR goes between MCU and magnetics.
