RM46L852: GPIO Output Buffer Drive Strength

Hi Team,

Can we ask for some clarifications about the output buffer drive strength for the high state for the GPIOs on the RM46L852? It says 2mA in the spec but we're quite not sure if we properly understand the description given on Table 5-4 of the datasheet. Asking this as the 2mA drive strength seems very low for a GPIO drive capability.

The output pins typically do not drive DC loads. The output buffer drive strengths are specified accounting for switching loads.

Hi Sunil,

Many thanks for your response. Our customer intends to use this in driving a LED through a NPN transistor. So they'd like to know the actual current drive (or if it would be suitable) as there has to be a maximum recommended drive current capability or "not to exceed" specifications, as it would be the case for common MCU GPIO/LED implementation use cases. Can you advise?

Hi Jejomar,

This is the output buffer drive strength specified in the datasheet. e.g. if the output buffer drive strength on a GIOx signal says 2mA, then that is the limit that must not be exceeded.
