DRV8353: Can the chip be used in 72V motor drive system?

Hi,

The Drv8353H is a 100V mosfet driver chip, I use it in my servo drive system which drive a 36V motor, or a 48V motor, and even a 60V servo motor. It seems to work normally. My question here is, the chip can be used in a 72V servo motor drive system ?

  • Hello, and thanks for your question.

    We normally recommend 50%-100% margin in voltage range on top of the supply voltage to account for any supply pumping that the motor may cause. DRV835x normally is used in 60V and below systems. However this margin is a rule of thumb, and not a hard requirement.

    DRV835x is rated to ~100V abs max, and so any voltage above that can cause damage to the device.

    Adding more bulk capacitance, taking care of how you decelerate the motor, or adding external voltage clamping circuits can help prevent the supply voltage from exceeding 100V. As long as the voltage stays below 100V, the device will operate as expected.
