DRV8874-Q1: How much withstand voltage of capacitor between CPH and CPL is needed?

Part Number: DRV8874-Q1

Hi team,

How much withstand voltage of capacitor between CPH and CPL is needed?
I would like to decide part # of charge pump capacitor. Is it possible to use 0.022uF with 16V withstand voltage capacitor?

Regards,
Ochi

  • Hi team,

    There is an additional question.

Could we use the capacitor for charge pump (between CPL and CPH) other than 0.022uF? For example, 0.01uF or 0.047uF?
Could you please tell me the recommended capacitance value or range?

    Regards,
    Ochi

  • Hi Yoshiki,

I would like to decide part # of charge pump capacitor. Is it possible to use 0.022uF with 16V withstand voltage capacitor?

Yes. for optimal charge pump performance, we recommend 16V rated X5R or X7R 22nF capacitor for CPH-CPL.

Could we use the capacitor for charge pump (between CPL and CPH) other than 0.022uF?

Yes you can however it will affect the switching characteristics of the charge pump. The capacitor between CPL and CPH will charge up and dump it's charge to the VCP capacitor. Once the VCP voltage reaches a certain value, the CPH-CPL capacitor will stop charging the VCP capacitor until the VCP voltage drops to a certain level. If the CPH-CPL capacitor value is too low, it may not be able to charge VCP to its designed value and the high-side FETs may not fully turn ON.

Could you please tell me the recommended capacitance value or range?

There is some capacitance variation allowed. Typically the capacitors can vary up to 30% from the recommended values. However, please use the recommended value for optimal performance.
