DRV10987: electrical noise comparison between BLDC vs. Brushed motor drives

Our customer is looking to improve system reliability while minimizing electrical noise by replacing their current brushed motor with a BLDC motor.

Drive info: 1800 RPM max, 60mA, 10V, catheter-based ultrasound imaging EE, motor is geared down (6.3:1) so to achieve target 60 frames per secs. 

Design priorities: 1) simplify design (reliability, mfg cost, service etc.), 2) reduce footprint, 3) reduce cost

After doing some more research on BDC vs BLDC electrical noise, the consensus I found is that BDC motors generally have higher audible and electrical noise compared to BLDC motors due to the brushes. White noise produced between the brushes and the commutator interface is not present in the brushless motors. 

Q#1: Is this a valid assumption?

I was thinking of recommending an integrated BLDC solution like DRV10987, which has 180o / sinusoidal control.

and the table on slide 47 summarizes the audible noise between trap, sine, and foc controls. 

Q#2: Will the electrical noise performance correlate with the audible noise as shown in the table below? 

In other words, does Sine control offer lower electrical noise compared to trap but higher compared to FOC?

Q#3: do you have another driver you would recommend for low electrical noise performance?

    Brushless DC motors provide better acoustic performance compared to Brushed DC motors. 

    A1: DRV10987 device is a 3-phase sensorless 180° sinusoidal motor driver which provides better acoustics performance compared to trap. 

    A2: Yes, electrical noise performance will correlate to audible noise as shown in the table. Sine control will offer lower electrical noise because the phase current wave shaping in sine control is sinusoidal. When the wave shaping is sinusoidal, harmonics will be minimum. However, in trap control, harmonics in phase current will cause audible noise. 

    A3: I would recommend to use DRV10987 for better acoustic performance.
