DRV8908-Q1: Using the DRV8908-Q1 as 8 individual Push-Pull driver

Part Number: DRV8908-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8816,

Hi Team,

May we ask your help regarding the customer's inquiry below.

I'm looking for a driver for 8 24V push-pull outputs.
In the past I´ve also used the DRV8816 if I need two outputs.
But the DRV890x family is so described from the perspective of a motor driver, I am not sure if I have overlooked something that contradicts the individual use of the outputs.
PWM ->OFF
enable extended overvoltage
OLP: (OLD_OP = 1 and OLD_REP = 1 ) OR all HBx_OLD_DIS=1
...
I am not sure whether I have captured all the boundary conditions with it.
Have I missed something?

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

Thank you for interested in DRV8908-Q1. DRV890x family is described for motor drive as well, however design concept is multi channel half bridge. You can use DRV8908-Q1 as 8 channel push pull(H-Bridge) output. Continuous Mode(8.3.1.1.1) should be good one to chose.

-Extended overvoltage is the protection function when VM(24V supply voltage) is abnormally high.

-Not related your concern for push-pull use case.

-OLD(Open load detection) can be disabled on register OLD_CTRLx. Then OLD_REP and OLD_OP should not be affected. We can disable all OLD on OLD_CTRL_1/3/4/5/6. (Disable all OLD related- OLD, OLD_NEGLOLD,POLD,VM_POLD)

One thing I would like to highlight is SPI communication is required to manipulate each H-Bridge.

-DRV8908-Q1 does not have hardware interface like IN1/IN2/EN1/EN2 of DRV8816.

-Required to set/reset HBX_HS_EN and HBX_LS_EN via SPI.

Hopefully SPI control is OK for your application.

    Thanks,

    regards

    Shinya

  • Hi Shinya,

Thank you very much for your response. I will check with our customer if he has further inquiries.
