DRV110: Recommended Power Supply

Part Number: DRV110

We're operating off a 24V battery (ranges 22-30V). So instead of relying only on the internal zener and external resistor for regulation, I was thinking of adding a linear regulator to supply a regulated 12VDC. With that I would still use the recommended 1k resistor per table 3. But, first, does this seem like a reasonable way to power the chip from a variable battery voltage? And how should I size the supply? It looks like it can source/sink 15mA to the MOSFET gate. Does that mean a 20mA supply would be sufficient?
