DRV110: DRV110 External FET Setup

I am interested in utilizing the DRV110EVM evaluation board to drive a +24VDC solenoid at an initial peak current of 533 mA before dropping its sustained current to 267 mA. With the use of external resistors the DRV110EVM board has a max hold current of 150 mA which is unfortunately too low. Therefore, an external FET would be required with the DRV110EVM to drive the current load and the DRV110EVM would serve to control step current level such as .533A/0.267A.

Would it be possible to get some feedback on this external FET setup to achieve these specifications?

DRV110 is a great choice to solve your analog needs, thanks for the interest.

I think it would be most helpful if you could share more details as to what your concern is with external FET setup. How did you arrive to conclusion that EVM has a max hold current of 150mA?

My best suggestion for you is to refer to the calculation tool for this device found here - DRV110 data sheet, product information and support | TI.com

Specs on the FET used on DRV110EVM are here - N-channel 600 V, 7.3 typ., 1 A SuperMESH Power MOSFET in a DPAK package (st.com).

The drain current of the FET is sufficient to meet your desired peak and hold current values. However, you will likely have to decrease your RSENSE value, which requires a small EVM modification.
