BOOSTXL-DRV8301: Integrated FET based BLDC Driver ; Mass Production

Part Number: BOOSTXL-DRV8301
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8301, DRV10970, DRV8316, DRV8316REVM, MCT8316Z

Dear Sir/ Madam,

We are using BLDC motor for our application. We are presently using DRV8301 EVM board for our application, which is working fine. For mass production we want to finalized based on below requirements.

Pl motor driver which suits our application and which is available in the market for directly purchase from (Mouser/ Digi-Key/ TI)

Our requirements:

1. Voltage: 12V

2. Current: 3.5 A peak and 2.3 A (average rms)

3. Integrated FET based BLDC motor driver

4. Integrated hall effect sensor control

5. Sinusoidal or field oriented control

Tapas

  • Hello Tapas,

We will get back to you with a suggestion tomorrow!

  • Hello Tapas,

Thank you for posting to the forum and for your patience. In our current portfolio we do not have one device that currently meets all the conditions you have listed here. The closest device we have is the DRV10970 but it does not meet you necessary current conditions.

Reason being is that most hall effect integrated control devices we offer  have integrated trapezoidal control and do not offer sinusoidal or FOC control. Currently with the DRV8301EVM you are using an external control as the input and are driving it with external MOSFETS. Perhaps another solution would be to use the DRV8316, which includes integrated FETs that meet you motors conditions and use external control like you are with the DRV8301 you are currently using. Which means hall inputs are going to the MCU and PWM outputs are going out of the MCU to the DRV8316.

If you are able to provide more information on your application I could possibly provide more suggestions.

    Best,

    Isaac

  • Hello Isaac,

    Thanks for your reply.

We think DRV8316, best suits our application (only it does not have Sinusoidal or field oriented control). If we remove Sinusoidal or field oriented control from our requirement then which motor control IC will be best suit for our application, based on your answer we think it is DRV8316.

We were not able to find any stock of DRV8316REVM as well as IC. Let us know if we can get samples for initial testing, or share link from were we can purchase the DRV8316REVM as well as IC.

    Regards,

    Tapas

  • Hello Tapas,

Correct the DRV8316 does not have built in sinusoidal control or FOC but like mentioned can be taken care of via the MCU. If trapezoidal control is an option for your application I believe that another great device to look at would be the MCT8316Z.

The MCT8316Z provides some of the capabilities the DRV8316 includes such as the integrated FETs but also includes some built in functionality that you might find useful. Such as taking the hall sensors directly as an input to provide the sensored trapezoidal control. This means  it has a built in algorithm to minimize coding needs to get a motor spinning.

Unfortunately both the DRV8316 and MCT8316Z have samples out now but they are both currently out of stock and the devices will not be released to the market until sometime next month. The MCT8316Z does have an EVM available right now if this and option which you can take a look by clicking this link.

Is there a specific reason why you are interested in using sinusoidal or FOC as control methods?

    Best,

    Isaac
