DRV8353M: DRV8353 Inquiry

Part Number: DRV8353M
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8353, DRV8332, DRV8312, DRV8313

Hi,

Good Day. I have a customer who is working with DRV8353M. Please see below his query for your reference. Thank you very much.

drv8353 and the like can be driven with 1 x pwm, 3 x pwm, 6 x pwm. Driving with 1 pwm does not provide precise control for position control, I guess. (for floating point angular values) for example, if we want the motor shaft to move at 360 degrees to a value like 19.498 degrees, I think at least 3 x pwm is required. I think it cannot be done with 1 x pwm, is this information correct?

Best Regards,

Ray Vincent

  • Hello Ray,

1xPWM simply executes sensored trapezoidal control of the motor (60 degree electrical angle resolution).

You need an encoder/resolver with a microcontroller running a position control loop (servo drive system) along with the motor driver circuit to implement position control.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Hi Matt,

Good Day. Please see below the response of our customer to your reply. Thank you very much.

We will drive with a microcontroller. But as far as I understand, foc cannot be made with 1 pwm with the microcontroller, at least 3 x pwm is required like drv8332 and drv8312. Is it correct?

In short, either 3 x pwm or 6 x pwm is a must.

But as in drv8313 and drv8332, I think 3 x pwm is enough for foc.

    Is this information correct?

    Best Regards,

    Ray Vincent

  • Hello Ray,

1x PWM cannot be used for FOC control. You must use 3xPWM or 6x PWM. 3xPWM makes FOC a little easier than 6xPWM because you don't need as many PWM signals to operate FOC. But 6xPWM is more flexible and allows the MCU to control the dead time.

    Thanks,

    Matt
