DRV8350H-EVM: Gate driver and Unknown Error on H and S EVMs

I have an issue with the DRV8350H and S EVMs - I've been playing with the DRV8350H and S EVMs, and have seen that under heavy motor braking, the DRV8350 chip eventually fails permanently (with error "Gate Driver" on the S part, and "Unknown" on the H part since it does not have SPI to read the error). What could be causing this issue, and is it possible to mitigate such a failure in my own design? My guess is that maybe the SHx pins are going over or under the voltage max ratings for the chip under heavy braking.

Thanks for reaching out via the e2e forum -

In a situation with heavy motor braking, the motor can actually cause a lot of excessive voltage and current on the MOSFET power stage.

for voltage, this can be even on the order of magnitude of 2x the motor's nominal operating voltage
and can cause damage to components without sufficient voltage rating margin
Question: what VM/Vdrain operating voltage are you intending to use this part with?

I would recommend checking if your MOSFETs have any damage after the heavy braking incident

something like a simple drain-source resistance measurement, as well as a gate-source resistance measurement,
a gate drive fault usually happens when the DRV device's GHx/GLx outputs don't result in the corresponding MOSFET gate voltage after tDRIVE time.

I have also attached some resources on high-power motor driver system design,
just to give you an idea of some techniques that can protect your system and improve performance.
