DRV8428: Stepper motor drive

Part Number: DRV8428

Hi team,

issue: The customer designed a drive circuit using the drv8428 stepper motor drive chip, but the motor only vibrates but does not spin when used.

Note: The circuit is designed with reference to a typical application in the chip manual.

Could you help check this case? Thanks!

Best Regards,

Cherry

  • Hello, Cherry,

Would you share the output current, step signal, VREF and OUTx voltage waveform?

    Regards,

    Wang Li

  • Hi Wang,

    Thanks for your reply.

The customer sets the en and nsleep pins of the motor high, the motor starts vibrating and then enters a step signal to the motor, still vibrates. Since the customer does not have a current monitoring device, a 3-ohm observation voltage is placed between the stepper motor and the drive board aout1 pin, as shown in Figure 1. In the same way, it is observed that bout1 has no output and no change after the stepping signal is given, as shown in Figure 2.

For vref, the customer inputs a voltage of around 2.9v via the dac of the control board (since the drive current is 1A), but the motor will still vibrate even if the vref pin is left empty when enabled.

    Figure 2: Step signal

    Thanks and Best Regards,

  • Cherry,

Why is the low voltage of the stepping signal not at ground? Is the controller floating from the motor driver ground?

BTW, on the layout, please make solid connection on VM capacitor and DVDD capacitor, instead of hatched connection.

Also, I saw Dong Yang posted the same question: (+) DRV8428: Motor driver doesn't work - Motor drivers forum - Motor drivers - TI E2E support forums

  • Hi Wang Li,

Then we can close this thread since the customer has posted the question by himself.

    Thanks for your help again!

    Best Regards,
