BOOSTXL-DRV8320RS: change current limit

Part Number: BOOSTXL-DRV8320RS

Hello,

I am working with DRV8320RS EVM board.

The problem I have at the moment is that the motor runs only upto 3A. I want to test the motor to the max 15A phase current.

Do anyone here know how I can change the current limit to 15A? I couldn't find a way to change the current limit unfortunately as I am new with this EVM.

  • Hi Sunil,

You mention that the motor only runs up to 3A. Once the motor exceeds 3A is the motor driver running into an overcurrent fault? If this is not the case, then adjusting the current limit through the Vds monitoring wouldn't make a difference since the overcurrent feature is not actually limiting the current. There are several factors that determine how much current the motor will draw during operation. For the DRV8320RS EVM, a reference speed is set in the GUI and the motor control algorithm will attempt to accelerate the motor to that reference speed, and once that speed is reached it will seek to maintain that speed during operation. There will be a particular amount of current that will be consumed by the motor at that speed. If a torque is applied to the motor, such as when a load is applied to the motor, this will increase the current consumption of the motor necessary to maintain the speed. The ratings/parameters of the motor that you are using will be a factor in the current that the motor will need under various circumstances.

Let me know if this clarifies the behavior that you are seeing.

  • Hi Sunil,

One other thing to note, for the DRV8323RS EVM the default gate drive current (IDRIVE) in the SPI settings is 1A/2A source/sink current, which can cause issues with ringing on the gates and switch node of the half bridges during the switching of the MOSFETs. I would recommend changing the IDRIVE settings to 30mA/60mA source/sink to minimize ringing on the MOSFETs. The register settings for the IDRIVE that I recommend are shown in the image below:
