MCT8316Z: Digital Halls - Datasheet Mistake?

Part Number: MCT8316Z

Hello, the team is using the MCT8316Z with digital hall inputs.

Section 8.3.2 and Figure 8-4 recommends that HNX pins are left floating.

However, section 9.2.2 in the datasheet recommends that you bias the HNX pin with AVDD/2.

Why are the two sections saying different things? Which one is recommended?

  • Hi Daniel,

Section 8.3.2 is for when the mode is configured for digital Hall inputs. In this mode, HNx can be left floating because the Hall comparator compares HPx to AVDD/2 as the common mode voltage. The device assumes that the HPx hall inputs are digital Hall signals that have a pullup to 3.3V.

Section 9.2.2 assumes the mode is configured for analog Hall inputs, and is for open drain output Hall sensors. The pullup to AVDD is expected, but since the device is in Analog hall input mode, then an external bias (in this case AVDD/2) needs to be applied to HNx to compare the HPx voltage to the "common mode voltage" - which is HNx in this case.

    Thanks,
    Aaron
