Hi,

Is it possible to change the overvoltage threshold in hardware configuration (EN/PH)? We have a voltage supply that work between 30V and 38.5V however the DRV8243 work until 33V (after this voltage we are not sure if the driver will stop running or not).

Hi Benjamin,

Thank you for your question and I will be happy to help you out today.

Regarding your first question, the overvoltage threshold is set for hardware configuration in order to be able to change the threshold you must be interfacing with the device via SPI, in which case you can set 4 different threshold functions using the Vmov parameter. This information can be found in Page 3 of the datasheet in Table 5-2:

In the hardware version the overvoltage threshold is set to a MIN of 33.6 so I would recommend designing for a maximum VM of 33V such that overvoltage is not triggered unintentionally. More choices can be set using the SPI variant. More information can be found in page 17 of the datasheet in table 7.5.11 in the Vmov parameter.

Hi Benjamin,

In that case I would recommend using a different part, the DRV8243-Q1 is not suited for constant voltages that are this high.

I would recommend looking at the DRV8256 as it has a higher voltage tolerance.:

Hi Pedro,

Thank you, but the peak current is too low. We need to have a driver that work between 30V and 40V for the supply voltage and can be able to deliver a minimum of 10A peak current(more will be very appreciate). Moreover we saw in the datasheet that SPI variant be able to disable overvoltage monitoring, what happen if the voltage increase over 40V?

Hi Vanni,

You are correct, you can completely disable the overvoltage protection using the SPI variant. However know that this will come with potential risks of damaging the device. The calypso series of devices would be a good place to look at. For the maximum possible voltage and current you will want to look at:

It goes up to 40V, 32A

There is also the DRV8243 that goes up to 21A.

The main limitation of voltage will be the ratings of the internal FETS of the driver. If the voltage increases above 40V you risk damaging the internal FETS. If this is a possibility I would recommend looking at our portfolio of External FET Gate Drivers, that allow control of external FETS that are rated for higher voltages.

The DRV8702 and DRV8703 would be a good place to start as they have a 47V abs max.
