DRV8300DIPW-EVM: compatibility with development boards other than LAUNCHXL-F280049C

Part Number: DRV8300DIPW-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LAUNCHXL-F280049C, , LP-AM263, DRV8300

Hi,

reading the documentation and this thread I understand that the DRV8300DIPW-EVM needs to be connected to the LAUNCHXL-F280049C to use the programmable gain amplifiers in order to measure the currents.

If I'm not going to use the current sensing from the DRV8300DIPW-EVM can I connect it to another development board?

I'd like to connect the DRV8300DIPW-EVM to the LP-AM263 and use it only as an output (controlling the PWM outputs).

Regards

Carlo

  • Hi Carlo,

Will let Aaron from our team comment further on this topic between tomorrow and early next week.

From initial evaluation of your question, the main things I'd suggest checking are:

    1. pin-mapping of the header pins on the DRV8300DIPW-EVM vs the other launchpad you're using,
      1. since this EVM is normally a plug-in solution for LAUNCHXL-F280049C as shown in the front page of EVM user guide: https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvubv6/slvubv6.pdf
      2. the LAUNCHXL-F280049C already has the correct pin mapping: https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/spruii7b/spruii7b.pdf

      3. I am not sure what the LP-AM263 pin assignment has, but if they are different then you'll have to re-do the pin assignment through many jumper wires rather than direct BOOSTER-to-LAUNCHPAD plug-in.
    2. Also, I think the EVM GUI for DRV8300 was intended to have the 49C and 8300 EVM connection, so if you are changing the launchpad it may also require you to do a bit more coding modifications through code-composer-studio project rather than having a ready-to-use GUI
      1. since DRV8300 is one of our more simple devices to implement, it may be a good idea to refer to the gate driver control scheme on page15 of datasheet, in section titled "8.3.1.2 Mode (inverting and non inverting INLx)

    Best Regards,
    Andrew

  • Hi Carlo,

You can connect any hardware MCU development board to the DRV8300DIPW-EVM. The dedicated MCU hardware is the LAUNCHXL-F280049C, which has a GUI and firmware to support sensored trapezoidal commutation using the DRV8300DIPW-EVM, but you can use any MCU hardware development kit to jumper over the necessary signals (PWM outputs, GPIO, ADCs, etc.)

As Andrew said, I don't know if the DRV8300DIPW-EVM will mate to the LP-AM263, but you can definitely jumper over the necessary signals to commutate the motor.

For a quick overview on the signals needed to interface with the DRV8300DIPW-EVM, I have attached the "LaunchPad connections" of the schematic below:

    Thanks,
    Aaron
