DRV8332: Can DRV8332DKD be soldered to PCB by wave soldering?

Part Number: DRV8332

Hello guys,

One of my customers is considering using DRV8332DKD for their next products.

At this moment, they have the following question. Could you give me your reply for them?

Q. Can DRV8332DKD be soldered to PCB by wave soldering?
If you have any comment or document, please tell me.

Your reply would be much appreciated.

Best regards,

Kazuya.

  • Hello Kazuya,

Thank you for posting your question to the E2E.

I will discuss the question with the team and aim to provide feedback by next week Wednesday.

    Best Regards,

    Akshay

  • Hey Kazuya,

    Thank you for your patience.

The DRV8332 is a surface mount component. So, the recommended method of soldering it would be Reflow soldering. Wave soldering is more suited for through hole components. Since this unit is a leaded package it might be possible to use wave soldering if the DRV is placed on the bottom of the PCB for the wave solder. The thermal pad is located on top of the DRV8332 unit so that should not pose an issue.

    Hope this offers some clarification.

    Best Regards,

    Akshay

  • Hello Akshay

Thank you very much for your reply.

I understood that DRV8332 could be assembled by wave soldering but TI doesn't recommend wave soldering.
Could I ask you an additional question as the below?

    Q. Is the DRV8332 electrical characteristics guaranteed even after wave soldering?

Thank you again and best regards,

    Kazuya.

  • Hey Kazuya,

    Thank you for your patience.

Since we have designed the board to be used as a surface mount, we cannot guarantee all the electrical characteristics if wave soldering is being used.

    Akshay

  • Hello Akshay

Thank you very much your prompt reply.
I understood that all the electrical characteristics are not guaranteed if wave soldering is being used.

Thank you again and best regards,

    Kazuya.
