DRV8711: 1/200 microsteps

Part Number: DRV8711

Hi Team,

Our customer would like to confirm if the DRV8711 can be used for 1/200 microsteps. According to our customer,

I watched the training videos and I tried to find information about changing microstep values in datasheet (DRV8711). But there are only constant values as full step, half step,1/4….1/256. And my motor 200 steps per a turn and for 40000 steps I must arrange 1/200 steps. But I couldn’t find any method for changing to any value in DRV8711. Is it possible with DRV8711?

https://training.ti.com/ti-precision-labs-motor-drivers-microstepping-bipolar-stepper-motors?context=1139747-1138777-1139741-1139864

Table 3 of the datasheet shows that there are 1/128 and 1/256 microsteps but it seems the 1/200 microsteps is not supported. How is it possible to drive a motor with 1/200 microsteps?

Regards,

Danilo

  • Danilo,

Can you explain the reason for 1/200?  This is a very interesting request.

    All of our devices support 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64. 1/128, and 1/256 so you can get a full electrical rotation.

    Regards,

    Ryan

  • Hi Ryan,

Here is the response of our customer.

The reason, generally the user of step motor driver with PLC are using that value and I am attaching a Picture of the step motor driver cover which explain the settings of pulse/turn and etc.

    Regards,

    Danilo

  • Hey Danilo,

TI motor drivers support micro stepping like the top half of that table such as 2/4/8/16/32/64/128 and ours also often go up to 256 microsteps, where the above driver only supports 128.  However, TI stepper drivers do not support 5/10/20/25/40/50/100/125 microstepping.
