DRV8328: Using DRV8328 for single phase motor

Hello,

I'm 99% confident I can use this part for a single phase BLDC motor but I just wanted to ask the question so I don't make an expensive mistake.

Can I do this?

My approach would be to use the INHA and INHB inputs (3x PWM input version) to drive two of the half bridges which I would combine into an H-bridge configuration.

For INHC and INLC, I would just tie them to ground so that GHC/GLC are kept low and SHC would be high-z.

Is it ok to leave GHC/GLC floating in this configuration?

Are there other considerations that I need to account for such as inadvertently triggering one of the protective circuits?

Hey Seth,

So you can use two of the phases to drive the single phase BLDC motor.

We recommend connecting in the following manner for the unused phase.

INHx/INLx = connect to GND
BSTx = floating
GHX/GLX = floating
SHX = connect to GND

This should prevent bootstrap under voltage from triggering.

I have one more quick question:

It turns out that the motor we are using isn't brushless. It is a brush-commutated DC motor.

I can't think of any reason electrically why this would pose an issue for the DRV8328 but I noticed that your website has an entire product line dedicated to BDC (brushed DC) motors. I would prefer to use the DRV8328 because there is ample stock of this component available.

Is there any reason why the DRV8328 would have issues driving a BDC motor?

Hey Seth,

The same can be applied for BDC and drv8328 can be used to control BDC driver as well but you will have one unused phase.
